Reg N.I.C.E. of God'z Original Gangstaz dubbed Gina Brown "the gospel hip-hop diva". This accolade is not surprising, as Ms. Brown contributed considerably in the G.O.G.z' debut release which was out last summer. And the same smooth vocal quality that made songs like "No Compromise" and "A Day N Tha Life" so lovely back in '96 is back again, this time with her own release.

<Picture: In His Time>This album applies a very simple formula. Mellow R&B chords with slow-groovin' jeep beats and silky vocals combine to make some nice music. Gina Brown (not to be confused with the Gina that released "Eternity" on N*Soul Records) has a voice reminiscent of the velvety stylings of Kristle Murden or Deniece Williams. The hip-hop arrangements come courtesy of LA "J" Edmonds and Juan "The Doctor" Tyus, who also did some production work on the Grapetree jazz release "Another Way to Praise".

I like to take my time when I'm listening to demo copies of new albums, but when I heard the song "Seek His Face" (track #8 on the CD) I was sold. That song is tha bump. The beat itself is so lovely, and then the backup flows by Preach DOG and Reg NICE just contribute and make the song that much more funkdafied. That was the kicker. Generally I don't buy a CD for one song, and I'm by no means saying that "Seek His Face" is the only good song on the album. But frankly, I would have paid $15 for just that one song, because I know I'll be getting my mileage out of it. And so will you.

Check-out the full CD, it looks like they are off to a pretty good start.

Gevaarlijk spel? Dit CD'tje is weer een aanval op de duivel en zijn terrein. GOG'z is een afkorting van God's Original Gangstaz welke uit PREACH D.O.G. en Mr. Reg-N.I.C.E. bestaat. De naam van de band is niet origineel maar de muziek verschilt wat meer van de Gospel Gangsta's. De muziek is over het algemeen wat rustiger en ook de raps zijn wat rustiger en een diepe baslijn. De samples zijn vaak bekend maar toch speciaal. Ook wordt gezongen door Mr. Reg N.I.C.E. zelf maar ook een aantal andere onbekende zangers. Dus veel Soul en soms een vleugje Praise te bespeuren. Opvallend is ook de stukjes bijbelteksten en preekjes die worden gegeven op 'spannende' deuntjes. De raps hebben wat weg van het oude werk van 2PAC en soms ook MC Eight. Zoals op bijna elke Hip Hop CD zijn er gastrappers, hier zijn dat MC Storm, D-Lite, Reese Cup en de wat bekendere Lord Byron (I.D.O.L. King). In het nummer 'Where He Brought Me From' leggen ze hun getuigenis af. Dit nummer is vrijwel het enige snellere nummer die doet denken aan Compton (MC Eight, DJ Quick). Een stukje daarvan gaat zo: "I'm from a mighty long way where He brought me from. I was flippin', trippin' and fallin' and He pulled me up. Gangbangin' was my everyday thang and hangin' and everybody know to get an economic slangin'.". Nee, het leven van GOG'z was geen spelletje, maar nu zijn ze serieus bezig om de duivel schaakmat te zetten.

Het raprapport. Gospel Gangstas deel II. Het is 1996. Het G-Funk tijdperk. Het verhaal speelt zich af in de straten van LA. De mensen hebben de band met God verbroken. Bendes vechten tegen elkaar en maken elkaar af. De hoop is al opgegeven. Maar de stad wordt opgeschrikt en komt in rep en roer. Vier gangsters zijn er op uit om de stad te redden, koste wat het kost. Dit was niet hun eerste poging. Ze maakten eerder hun debuut met Gang Affiliated. Deze keer maakten ze het Christelijk complot met Holy Terra, het nieuwe platenlabel van DJ Dove (voormalig SFC). Holy Terra is de duivels ergste nachtmerrie! De Gospel Gangstas zijn bekleed met de wapenuitrusting van God, daarom deinzen ze nergens voor terug. Ze komen wijzer, zelfverzekerder en relaxter over. De CD is een complot en elk nummer die op de CD staat is een wapen op zichzelf. In het 2e nummer 'O.G.G.'s Go On' (Original Gospel Gangstas Go On) laten ze met trots zien dat ze in de laatste dagen samen met de Heer sterk staan. De munitie voor dit nummer is een synthesizer tune, vergezeld van soulzang in het refrein. Deze formule komt in andere nummers ook terug. Het opvallendste nummer is Demon Killa. Hierin rekenen de GG af met de duivel en demonen met krachtige volzinnen als deze: "I Bible whip'm... and my Bible might remain a conceald weapon. See prayers help my text spit, my Bible is my next clip...".
In de titelsong 'Do or Die' moeten mensen kiezen uit 2 mogelijkheden: Hemel of hel. Backslider (afvallige) gaat over het feit dat als je relatie met god vervaagd is, dat je altijd terug kunt komen. Na een controversi‰le, opschuddende, extreme en radicale terreuractie van de Gospel Gangstas wordt je tot nadenken gebracht met een preek. De Gospel Gangstas sluiten met een uitnodiging en gebed dit complot af. De Holy Terra saga continues..........

This is the long awaited second release from the west coast rappers. This one has crossed over to their new lavel Holy Terra records, run by none other than DJ Holy, Terra. This being their second release I had high expectations for this album, and at first listen I was not disappointed. I thought that the sampling and beats were cool and George Clinton-like, but I found that after listening for a couple of weeks, it was already colledting dust on my shelf. I guess it's probably because that whole gangsta thing isn't quite what it used to be and the days of snoop are just about over. However it was enjoyable and I think that if you are still into that whole sound than you should probably check this one out, they are still pretty dope. Also keep your eyes peeled for new projects coming out on the Holy terra lavel like, CMC's "Everyday Death Sentence" and R&B artist Bobby Ross availa. Plus, somewhere down the line, a dance hall reggae group called Christian Massive.

Zelfs in Nederland staat hun CD al drie weken in de Mega Gospel Top 20. Hah! Ze bewijzen dus dat er wel markt voor HipHop is. De CD klinkt volwassener dan hun vorige. De munitie is relaxte G-Funk beats, soulstemmen, ruige teksten, synthesizer tunes. Het coolste nummer vind ik Demon Killa, waarin de GG's koelbloedig afrekenen met de slaafjes van de duivel. The Holy Terra Saga continues.....

Coming out of L.A. are two of gospel rap's most authentic acts, pushing a positive message that ain't cliche. Gospel Gangstas, after causing quite a stir with their '94 debut Gang Affiliated, come back much more solid and focused with Do Or Die. Produced by Mr. Solo, the eleven tracks here roll by slower and smoother than last time out, with a lot more funk and a lot more truth (and without the annoying, self-justifying "interviews" with "Pastor Freddie" that marred the first album). If you thought Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise" was a bomb record, then check out these Gangstas.

De vier mannen van de Gospel Gangstas geven hun getuigenis: "Since He came into my life he never left me lonely". Dat doen ze buitengewoon gevarieerd: ze rappen, zingen, spreken en maken gebuik van allerlei gewone (bass, keyboards) en ongewone (rasp) instrumenten. Af en toe valt er zelfs een Cara‹bisch riedeltje te beluisteren. Soms klinken er allerlei buitenissige geluiden zoals loeiende sirenes en galmende voetstappen. Dit alles geeft een boeiende achtergrond aan de stemmen die onbetwist de hoofdrol spelen op dit produkt. Daarmee laten de heren van de "gang" overtuigend horen bij Wie ze zich hebben aangesloten.

Yo Coolio, Dr. Dre, Snoop Doggy Dogg, maak plaats! Zoek dekking want er zijn fanatieke Gospel Gangsters die nergens voor terugdeinzen. Uit de sloppenwijken van LA waar ze vroeger lid waren van de Crips en Bloods bendes. Maar nu hebben ze zich aangesloten bij God's Gang, de gevaarlijkste op de wereld. Ze laden hun wapens op door de bijbel te lezen en doen het kogelvrij vest der gerechtigheid aan. De CD staat vol G(od's)-funk, hoge keyboard toontjes en ruige rhymes. De soul- zangstemmen op de voor- en achtergrond geven een nieuw draaitje aan de muziek. De rapteksten van dit kwartet gaan vooral over de dagelijkse problemen waarmee veel donkere jongeren uit LA te kampen hebben. De CD roept je op om je bij God's Gang aan te sluiten. Laat je gangsigns zien zodat mensen weten bij wie je hoort. Bewijs de kracht die van God komt. Geef de vijand (duivel en demonen) geen kans om je neer te halen.

The Gospel Gangstas off their debut cd "Gang Affliated", have burst onto the scene with a new cd "Do or Die". Equipped with a new sound from the last cd, the O-Double-G's have created a very good cd with better lyrics and bass grooves. This is a must have for Christian rap fans.

ERACE staat voor Eliminating Racism en dat is ook het doel van deze CD. Een project om rasisme uit te roeien. De hele CD is een smeltkroes van Hip Hop met Jazz, Soul, Country, Blues en Po‰zie. Deze Fusion met diverse invloeden is niet zo gek als je bedenkt dat o.a. Toby McKeehan (een Gotee Brother) meewerkte en die met DC Talk ook diverse stijlen muziek heeft gemaakt. Aan het album werkte niet alleen DC Talk mee, maar ook de GRitS, Out Of Eden, Otto Price, Katina Boys en Christafari. De teksten zijn zeer po‰tisch, zoals in het nummer 'Poetry, Pros & Other Sundry Items': "Colors don't hate, people do, color's not the reason for racism, it's the justification. If no man has it in his constitution to be a slave, then he should not have it in his constitution to be a master". Dit album is echt volop muzikaal, diep en een must. ERACE laat nog eens zien dat rasisme en discriminatie volop leeft in Amerika, zelfs onder Christenen. Het is mij al eens overkomen dat ik van een Christen discriminerende taal hoorde. Ik hoop dat ERACE erin slaagt discriminatie uit te roeien.

Complex issues plus vivid lyrical images multiplied by furiously innovative rhymes to the power of funk beats and basslines equals unprecedented holy hip-hop.

Factor that equation and you'll come out with Coffee and Bonafied, the duo more commonly known as Grits. Teron Carter and Stacey Jones, the two primary MCs that comprise the group, have taken the hip-hop community by storm with their sophomore release, Factors of the Seven.

Your average store clerk at your local Christian bookstore probably won't know this, but Factors of the Seven is one of the most ground-breaking albums ever to be released in the Christian retail music market. Grits, which stands for Grammatical Revolutions In the Spirit, has been receiving critical acclaim since the release of their first album, Mental Releases. Having just hit stores on March 17th, Factors was widely anticipated by the secular heads as well as the sanctified. From the time I first saw news updates about the album at the Gotee website, I knew that this release was going to make waves through the many communities (both real and virtual) that comprise the hip-hop nation.

I listened to this album almost nonstop for approximately ten days, and the more I listened to it the more impressed I was with the overall quality of the project. There are four categories I like to use when critiquing rap albums: depth of lyrical content, innovation of rhyme scheme, phatness of beats and grooves, and the overall sound. Grits exceeded my expectations in all of these categories.

First, Factors deals with a wide range of subjects. There are songs dealing with lust in the church body, songs about having confidence in yourself, and songs about failure in personal relationships ("Mirage", "On My Own", and "Blame It On You", respectively). These are all very relevant issues in the lives of Christians today, and Grits attack these topics with accuracy and clarity.

Grits also upholds the standard of phat rhymes that was established with Mental Releases. Bonafied and Coffee (along with guest Knowdaverbs) continually weave vivid images and esoteric metaphors into their rhymes to form a dense layer of thoughts punctuated by ghetto colloquialisms. Grits is not for the casual listener; as a matter of fact, the first time I heard their debut album I didn't like it as much because I didn't understand everything that was said. It took me weeks of listening to really catch the depth of meaning in the songs. Yet, now that I am accustomed to their style, I find so much more substance in their songs in comparison to other rap artists.

As always with Gotee projects, the beats and grooves are tight. The rhythms on this album are more textured and improvisational, probably the product of a live drummer or well-programmed sequenced drum sounds, as opposed to the drum loops heavily relied upon in their first album. Factors has a nice mix of obscure samples, phat scratch/fader action, mellow keyboard licks and dexterous bass grooves. Production is top-notch, including some very nice effects on the vocal tracks for Cof and Bone. There are also some very good background vocals by Toby McKeehan of dcTalk and Danielle Kimmey of Out of Eden. The general sound of this album is conservative enough to please the average hip-hop listener, but there is a quality of originality that distinguishes the album from others in its genre.

Overall, Factors of the Seven is an excellent album. It features two of the best MCs in the music industry in Bonafied and Coffee, as well as guest appearances by Count Bass D and Theory and Jurny of LPG. I would recommend it to anyone who wants an dosage of Christ-like head-bobbin' hip-hop.

In de week na Flevo en voor de Marktactie waren ze al volop aan het texten schrijven voor dit album. Ze hebben alles ver van tevoren goed uitgedacht en komen met een klaar product. Innoverend hebben ze een stijl gecrëeerd die zowel erg technisch is als jazzy. Hun raps zijn altijd erg metaforisch, vloeien lekker. Een must voor progressieve muziekluisteraars.

Ik speel zelf wel eens met een drumcomputer, maar sta toch elke keer weer verbaasd als ik het duo GRitS bezig hoor. HipHop met ongeloofelijk ingewikkelde ritmes, zo ingenieus en toch zo natuurlijk; het zou me niets verbazen als hun harten ook dit soort drumpatronen zouden vertonen. 'Factors of the Seven' is de langverwachte opvolger van 'Mental Releases', de CD die ik het meest heb gedraaid in 1996, vooral dankzij het relaxte karakter ervan. In betrekkelijk korte tijd komt GRitS weer met een CD. Daarop 18 tracks (68 minuten) die pas na een tiental keer draaien begint door te dringen. De raps zijn schier eindeloos, terwijl Mr. Max (zowat het derde lid van GRitS) met veel geduld de songs heeft voorzien van samples, waarvan veel origineel spul. Ik moet zeggen, gospel HipHop blijft soms een beetje een echo, een kopie van wat er seculier gaande is. 'Factors of the Seven' brengt daar verandering in. GRitS veranderd? Mwoah - een beetje. Een beetje meer SFC zou ik zeggen, beetje meer R&B, maar zeker veel jazz, en dat maakt het nu zo lekker.

Deze twee zwarte rappers zijn enige tijd actief geweest als dancers bij DC Talk. Grits staat voor "Grammatical Revolution In The Spirit". In hun teksten rappen ze over allerhande onderwerpen, zoals vriendschap, kindermishandeling en de agressie in de Amerikaanse steden. Grits presenteert het Evangelie op een zeer reële wijze. Toby noemt het de beste HipHop van dit moment, waarin verschillende invloeden worden vermengt.

Als je de CD 'Gotee Night Out' kent of het album 'Loving Day' van Out of Eden dan zal deze groep je zeker niet zijn ontgaan. Relaxte (hoe schrijf je dat??) rap, met jazz invloeden. Teksten met een diepere bodem, verpakt in HipHop van hoog niveau.

Uit Nashville, 10-A-CEE verschijnt de zoveelste gospelgroep met een CD. Maar dit keer geen slappe hap maar gruttenpap. De GRITS (Gramatical Revolution In The Spirit) waren eerst dancers bij DC-Talk maar nu hebben ze zich opgewerkt. De nu verschenen debuut CD is uitgegeven op het nieuwe platenlabel Gotee. Deze CD is echt een revolutie in de Holy HipHop consumptie. De ingredienten zijn o.a.: natuurlijk vette, relaxte beats. Zoetstoffen zitten in de teksten die diep zijn en toch te begrijpen. Het spreekt meer vanuit het gevoel en emotie, echte po‰zie. Het produkt is op smaak gemaakt met jazzinstrumenten. Het produkt is goed verpakt zodat het een onbeperkt houdbare CD is. Ik droom weg bij een nummer en dan zie ik het al helemaal voor me: een oud caf‚ met blauwe lichten, ik zit aan een tafeltje te genieten van een glas melk en een optreden van de GRITS en wat jazz-artiesten. Ik hoop dat dromen uitkomen!

GRITS is flipping all scripts in 1995 with their funky verbosity. GRITS takes listeners to there and back, from Miles Davis to George Clinton one listen and you feel the decades just float on by.

Some people call the music Acid Jazz, others new Hip-Hop or Rap fusion. 'Mental Releases' is a mixture of rap, hip-hop, funk and jazz.

Hiphop-concerten zijn schaars in Nederland. Wie herinnert zich nog, jaaaaaren geleden PID in Amsterdam of daarvoor nog die piepjonge ventjes van DC Talk? Er wordt veel te weinig gedaan op dit gebied in Europa. Topjaar was 1995: T-Bone in Utrecht en Cauzin' Effekt op Flevo. In 1996 breekt Flevo opnieuw de lans voor de hiphop door GRitS uit te nodigen. Een uitstekend debuut, want Mental Releases kent géén zwakke nummers. Zorgvuldig opgebouwde tracks waarbij de winst te vinden is in de relaxte sfeer die de CD uitstraalt. Geen schreeuwerig of agressief gedoe, maar veel jazz en originele beats (ook wel acid- jazz genoemd). Het duo Coffee en Teron zijn echte 'urban-poets', opgegroeid op de straat. Nadat zij vrienden waren geworden tijdens hun 'baantje' als DC Talk dancer, besloten zij hun talenten te bundelen. Het directe gevolg is een eerlijke CD waarin thema's als 'vergeving' en 'verleiding' centraal staan.
