Stijl Eastcoast/Native Tongue
Dit tweetal britse HipHoppers komt uit Leeds. Ze voegen een nieuwe
stijl toe aan de Christelijke HipHop scene. Eastcoast met invloeden
van Native Tongue (De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest), maar rapper
Justin Thomas brengt geen amerikaanse namaak. Hij gebruikt zijn eigen
Britse accent in een brede woordenschat met een hoge moeilijkheids-
graad, waardoor de CD minder gauw verveeld. DJ Lee Jackson heeft geen
teksten en versterkt alleen het refrein en wat eind-woorden. Lee geeft
de nummers vorm d.m.v. jazzy loopjes, drumpaden en herkenbare maar
toch originele samples en scratches.
Hog heeft ook versterking van live muzikanten met bas, drums en
gitaar. Als je niet op Pinxterpodium bent geweest heb je hun geweldige
live-act gemist waarbij iedereen enthousiast in beweging kwam! Kortom,
dit CD'tje is muzikale en diepe HipHop. Een must voor puzzelaars en
zoekers naar verborgen (woorden)schatten.

The first time I was listening to this CD, I thought the CD was over after
track 5. The cover of this mini-album shows 5 titles, my CD-player counted 5
tracks, and I listened to 5 tracks, so what could go wrong? I was busy doing
some other stuff, and then, after about 10 minutes: ANOTHER SONG!!! At first
I thought the neighbours where a bit noisy, coz the song is faded in with a
lot of 'live-on-stage noise', but no, the CD containes 10 minutes of complete
silence and a live bonus-track of another song!!!

Boom! Big boys stomp booitz like the blitz! Zo klinkt het eerste
nummer van deze CD. Booitz is een dialect van Yorkshire voor boots of
schoenen. Dit vanwege het heen en weer gestamp tijdens optredens.
Rauwe engelse Hip Hop met diverse invloeden. De tracks zijn vaak jazzy
met een stevige beat en opvallend zijn de scratches en samples die
(DJ) Lee Jackson uitzocht. De tracks doen weer een beetje terug
grijpen naar de goeie oude tijd in Hip Hop rond 1990. Ondanks dat je
wat wegdroomt naar de ouwe tijd is de muziek zeker niet over datum.
Tekstueel is deze CD helemaal een must want Justin rapt in brits
dialect met een breed woordenschat. Hij gebruikt metaforen, gezegdes
en deelt letergrepen alsof 't brood is, je kan dus op deze CD
uitstekend verborgen boodschappen doen. Zijn dialect is na een aantal
keren luisteren geen brug meer. Een stukje uit 'Catch My Drift',
nummer vijf: "God weeps as the life force seeps. Through every crack
as the back of creation creaks. Greedy goals for the whole world over.
Give up your freedom of soul for a patch of clover". Als je op zoek
bent naar iets speciaal, origineel en diep dan geldt hier het gezegde
'wie de schoen past trekt hem aan'. Dus rauwe rappers, trek je Dr.
Martins, Timberlands of Catapillers aan en strik je veters en stomp
booitz like the blitz!

Lee Jackson and Justin Thomas are the Leeds based Hip-hop kings, with
style and humour to keep their audience happy. Matching this EP
against similar chart sounds, it compares favourably, even with the
West Yorkshire accents. The title track opens things off in rap mood,
with Justin supplying the vocals and Lee providing the mixing
techniques that have made him such 'hot property' on the DJ circuit.
All 5 songs proclaim the gospel in HOG's own inimitable style, of
which the slower 'Catch My Drift' is my favourite. HOG are playing at
many of this summer's festivals. Go and look in their house! 7/10.

Nederhop-band Heilig IJs (dutch for Holy Ice). Ya might have guessed,
these dudes from the Netherlands are rapping in their native language...
Album: Vertaalslag

De eerste nederlandse gospel Hip Hop act die het voor elkaar gekregen heeft om een CD te maken. Vertaalslag is een leuke CD met duidelijke taal uitgebracht in eigen beheer. Nederhop is breed toegankelijk voor iedereen. Het hoesje alleen al is Manga (Japanse strip) meesterwerk en alle texten zijn uitgetikt. De CD is verre van saai, stijlen van old school tot lage bassen en texten van makkelijk consumeerbaar tot zeer poėtisch. Volop skillz voor elk wat wils. De skips tussendoor zijn erg grappig. Voor maar 25 piek ben je in bezit van deze CD die zeker later een collectersitem wordt.
