Something about this album just grabbed me when I saw it. I'm not sure if it was the bright layout on the front, or the fact that the cover photo featured a brother with dreads at the bottom of a swimming pool. Either way, I grabbed it from the rack out of sheer instinct because I thought it was going to be good. And then I did something I almost never do. I bought it without listening to the demo.
Well I must have been operating in the prophetic that day, because it turned out to be a very unique album that I'm glad made it into my CD collection. I've enjoyed Maximillian's "Deeper Than Most" more than any other album from N*Soul, with the possible exception of "Once Upon A Time", released by Scott Blackwell in 1993. And this album possesses the same attributes that made "Once Upon A Time" such a winner.
First, this album is not just another pop-house album. It is a creative blend of house, jungle-rave (I think I just made that term up...shhh don't tell, though) and hip-hop. While most of the songs feature rhythms that bump the kick drum on all four beats, a technique typical of house music, the actual rhythm tracks are more varied than the typical pop-house song you hear on the radio. There are combinations of electronic drum sounds, acoustic percussion loops, and various types of samples ranging from gurgly keyboard riffs to high-pitched stabs.
Not only that, but there are also a couple tracks that digress from that whole style completely. There are two groove tracks, one of which flows seamlessly from a acid-jazzy instrumental to a harder-edged rap song and back again in about 6 minutes ("Deep Groove 2" and "Things Goin' On", respectively). And the last song, "The Ultimate Human Beat Box" is again very self-explanatory. It utilizes digital sampling with two tracks of dizznope beat-box loops overlayed with phonetic freestyle flows. It all adds up to a whole lot of gittin' funky on the mic. As I listened to Maximillian drop lyrics with ease, I started to experience a bit of deja-vu. His voice sounded so familiar, I wondered where I had heard it before. And then I remembered: Maximillian rapped as part of the Organized Rhyme Crew on T-Bone's latest album, "The Hoodlum's Testimony". It's no wonder he sounds so at-home on the microphone. As a matter of fact, my only beef with the album is that he didn't rap more. But his vocals sound good regardless of whether or not he sings or raps. The listener can decide which sounds better. Either way, I'm sure that everyone who hears this album will agree that of its genre, this album is definitely "Deeper Than Most."

Officieel was er nog niets uitgebracht van Mike E. in nederland, maar
we hadden hem al wel eens gehoord, of horen noemen bij andere rappers.
Voor de liefhebber een rap-CD die erin gaat als koek.

Stijl East Coast
Mike E blends a positive lyrical mix of east coast Hip - Hop and
smooth Motown funk. Some of these pioneering tracks feature only live
musicians and Mike E's masterful guitar work, a first for the world
of rap. The grooves on this record have been cut from the same cloth
as Marvin Gaye and James Brown with "props" to the jazz vibe Miles
Davis and John Coltrane.
