S.O.H.L. ( Straight Out Hard Lyrics) 4UR Tribe's Syke and Sevin have entered the Christian hip-hop arena with 2Tha Bazix. They also may have set a record for the most uses of "JC Junkie" on one album.

Their use musical melodies helps draw an immediate comparison to D.C. Talk. Where D.C. Talk brings their sung choruses to the front, Syke and Sevin hand several of the choruses to Eden. Her vocals are excellent and blend in well between the raps, leaving the choruses more in the background, letting Syke and Sevin pack the punch with the verses. While they use plenty of beats, breaks, and scratches, they avoid the overuse of samples.

The raps tend to speed by, but they are quite easy to understand. "Sohl 4UR Tribe Iz Funky" talks about reading the Bible, Christ's Salvation and how we need to be devoted to Him. "Funky Hometown Pinnochio Blues" makes the analogy of Satan as the champion of lies--Pinnochio. They show how we need to stop ourselves when we become angry and are tempted to curse to ask "Lord Have Mercy." "Heaven Sent" reminds us to wait for a mate given by God and avoid unwholesome relationships. "Let The Love Flow" encourages us to let God's love flow through us when we are deeply hurting inside. Syke and Sevin diss "puppet" government officials, urging them to wake up in "Stix and Stones" and sum up their feelings in the statement "stix and stones may break my bones, but politicians can never hurt me," and then diss selfish televangelists in "Nonsense." "Papa Dios" speaks of the realities of life on the streets and how it would be to die on the streets without securing a place in heaven. They wrap (or is that rap) up the project with an up-beat gospel-ish tune about how they use their rap in ministry to their friends.

Like D.C. Talk, they add several humorous tracks such as "Introduction," "The Producer Didn't Show," and "Intermission" which really get old after the third time that you hear them. Stick to the rap music, and leave the humor to comedians. Also, once you remove these tracks, the album comes up well under 40 minutes--a little short. Apart from that, it's a great hip-hop project.

Aan alle mensen die een auto hebben! Deze CD is uitermate geschikt om in je auto-installatie af te spelen. Dus haal je auto van de handrem en zet hem in de eerste versnelling. Erg goed geproduceerd, vette beats en toffee-samples. Het deed me eerst een beetje aan Masta Ace denken. Tekstueel is Super C. erg begaafd en gaat vaak vrij diep, maar hij pakt ook gewone onderwerpen aan. Hij vloeit volop als de waterval van Spa. Maar voor de echte dichtliefhebbers zijn er 3 interludes vol met poëzie en jazz aanwezig. De gedichten zijn gemaakt en opgevoerd door Red Bonez, DJ Cartoon en J.T. en deze zijn lijf! Dus mensen, gooi deze CD in de boombox van je auto en gebruik dit produkt als smeerolie om je motoriek weer gesmeerd te laten lopen.

Illumination is a little of old now, and I have had it for a while, but haven't been able to make a review of it. Illumination is an old school type rapper who has been around awhile and is a rock in Christian rap. SFC is a pretty good cd I like some songs more than others, but overall solid. I like the appearances of LPG on the cd, I their style seems a good contrast of SFC's. It's a good pick up.

Ik voel me nogal genomen als ik naar MTV Danceclips kijk en naar de Top-40 luister. Ben ik achterlijk ofzo? De meesten mijn omgeving zeggen van niet, dus het zou weleens niet aan mij kunnen liggen. Wat ik hoor en zie is stompzinnig en mist elk niveau waarop getracht wordt een beroep te doen op eventueel aanwezig I.Q. bij de kijker en luisteraar. De mannen en vrouwen, gekleed in gekleurde gordijnen, hijgen wat af door de microfoon en de camera. En je schrikt op als een raptrack eens niet over sex gaat. Kay LC: "Steady relationship is bad for my health..." En toen ik erop ging letten: je wordt overstelpt met dergelijke ongure, banale en totaal onzinnige rap. Voor 80 procent komt er ook weinig intelligentie kijken bij het maken van de meeste muziekjes. Dr. Alban's hitgevoelige deuntjes komen bij mij het ene oor niet eens in. Er zijn veel uitzonderingen: LL Cool J vind ik al tijden en albums lang funky en snelrappend, maar bij hem blijft het euvel van de teksten. Maar het alternatief voor al mijn frustratie kwam tot een eind: Phase III van SFC kwam uit. Het derde album is het absolute summum van CHrap dat tot nu toe uitkwam. Waar je het bij Grote vlagen hoorde bij Dynamic Twins, Freedom of Soul, Mike-E, P.I.D. en Stephen Wiley, bij Kleine vlagen bij Chuckie P., DC Talk, D-Boy en MC Ge Gee, hoor je alles nu voor het eerst op 1 CD tezamen: humor, scratching, close harmony rap, hardcore dreunen, sampling , statements tegen racisme, slogans voor Jezus.

The most anticipated comeback of the year is finally here. Sup's new EP entitled Raiders of the Lost Art is available on cassette and CD. The Sup The Chemist Beesyde Records release party will be held in March 1999.

THE DEAL- Hip-Hop purist and underground technician Sup drops a 6 track EP. THE TIGHT- Clearly one of Sup The Chemist's strong points in his delivery which seems to flow so easily that you can imagine Sup recording while chillin on a couch. For all artists trying to do the music thing you have to hear "Top Ramen Nites" where Sup tells the story

of how it is for an underground artist trying to make it. THE BITE- The only real problem here is that the beats tend to get repetitive.
THE BOTTOM LINE- This EP is getting the official HHN stamp of approval. Look for an interview with Sup The Chemist in a future newsletter!
