| Review: | Hip Hop compilations tend to waver between the scale of
surprising and exhaustive. Much of this wide breadth of
quality in these types of compilations can be attributed to
the mere fact that cohesion is almost impossible to achieve
in such a varied format. However, the upstart label Hip Hop
Is Music (lead by underground stalwart Braille) usher forth
a solid, if at times atonal, release in Heavy Rotation.
Braille’s vision for the record is simple: offer the public
a neat, hour long mix of new (to the public) and exclusive
tunes all while keeping a strong Hip Hop-first aesthetic.
The CD starts off with a brief intro track and leads right
into the title cut featuring Braille, Sivion (who’s just
released a debut LP) and Kaboose who all attack the fierce
head nod track from producer Vintage. Things get a bit
smoothed out with a strong track from Sivion, “I Still Love
H.E.R.”, produced by Siamese Sisters and is a refreshing
addition to the many odes written in honor of Hip Hop music.
There are two nearly perfect tracks on the disc. The first
of those two is “Changes” from The Procussions and Strange
Fruit Project and featuring production from recently signed
G-Unit in-house producer Illmind. This is one of the best
displays of melding melody, vocals and lyrics done in recent
time. Theory Hazit’s love song to the culture, “My Favorite
Hip Hop Joint”, is a breezy platter from producer Dilema.
Improper spelling aside, Dilema’s track should evoke both
smiles and head nods with Theory’s earnest rhymes capturing
the love he expresses perfectly. There are some snags
involved and they start around the middle of the disc.
Surreal’s “Moment In Time” is not necessarily a bad song,
but the excellent, jazzy track from MoO outshines his
subdued (perhaps by sheer virtue of the greatness of the
track?) delivery. Ohmega Watts’ entry, “Butterflies”, is
thankfully, perhaps purposefully, brief. Again, it is
another case of excellent production and lackluster rhymes –
but the track from Watts is expertly done. Big Rec’s
overloud “Unleashed” is just a sonic chalkboard scratch to
the ears with producer Lost Mind’s keyboard-heavy track
sounding like something far too epic and jarring given the
overall laid back vibe of the disc.
Things get back on track with Sojourn’s “Fresh Nostalgia”
with a very pleasing, funk-flavored track from Choice37.
Sojourn’s fits right into the pocket of the groove, almost
daring the listener to break into a fresh b-boy stance. In
all, Braille’s first foray as a label head/CEO is a good one
and will solidify his mark in the underground. There is a
lot of great music present on this disc so as a purchase, it
would be a wise one to make.

Various artists - Heavy Rotation
(HipHopIsMusic)
To preface this review let me first start off by saying that
I have the utmost respect for Braille both as an artist and
a business man. Having been faced with the decision to seek
a label capable of equivalently taking over his hands-on
approach OR refuse to lighten his burden of self-promotion,
self-booking, and self-management tasks... Braille chose to
keep his career fate within his own hands. In 2006
Braille's label known as Hiphop Is Music has officially
launched and this Heavy Rotation compilation is the
introduction.
Carrying exclusives, classic material, and new material from
some of the heaviest hitters in the underground such as Mars
ill, The Procussions, Sharlok Poems of LA Symph, Sojourn of
Future Shock, and fellow Lightheaded members Ohmega Watts
and Othello... Heavy Rotation has successfully accomplished
what it set out to do. The introduction is solid. Not only
is the production of excellent quality, but the lyrical
talent that goes beyond the obvious more well known names
continues into the underground introducing to some, and
reintroducing to others, those such as Shai Linne, Kaboose,
and Surreal (not to be confused with Surreal of The
Remnant), just to name a few.
Its rare that you find an album with 21 songs worthy of at
least 15 in what's ironically termed 'heavy rotation' on
my ipod playlists and cd player. This is one. Although
there is a few tracks by the lesser known artists I
personally didn't care for as a sound preference such as
the song "Drive" by Captions (formerly Longevity Crew) and
the cut called "4 Da Love" by GreenJade which seamed not
in the same league as the rest of the artists. That may not
be a fair comparison considering but nonetheless I felt
where the weaker spots of the disc.
Quite possibly one of the most exciting things about the new
label is the effectiveness in promoting quality talent
through consistency. Its nice to see some of the artists
such as Kaboose and Sivion getting a further spotlight to
shine with and I think Hiphop Is Music will be a good outlet
for their talents matching quality production with their
solid lyrical presence and style. I look forward to their
releases later this year under the Hiphop Is Music label.
Especially if this is a prelude of things to come.
Another gem on the disc is the exclusive by Mars ill called
"Reach" which lyrically hinted at the recent struggles of
the group to release their latest album "Pro Pain". This
exclusive falls between the groups albums in the midst of
some issues that caused their upcoming release's
postponement and gives their fans a nice teaser of things to
come. As has the whole Heavy Rotation compilation which will
surely give way to some exciting releases in the near
future. Overall, this a must have for the exclusives and a
nice intro to some new talent you may have not heard of
before.

Review: | Review - Hiphop is Music: Heavy Rotation

I must admit that I really dig the work ethic of the emcee
that goes by the name of Braille. Not only does he put out
some classic hip hop material but now he has out the plow
towards building a fantastic new label. And Heavy Rotation
serves as a boom-bapp-etizer for what is expected to be many
great releases coming out of the Hip Hop is Music camp.
The opening joint, 'Heavy Rotation' (featuring Braille,
Sivion and Kaboose) sets the tone for rest of the songs on
the compilation. Produced by Vintage, the motivating
bassline draws you into the track as the emcees spit high
powered rhymes. The following cut, 'People' features
Othello spittin' proper over a Tony Stone produced beat
that will have you bobbin' your head until you get a crook
in your neck (Icy Hot is recommended).
More stand out tracks are the Illmind produced 'Changes'
which features the Procussions and the Texas-bread Strange
Fruit Project and 'My Favorite Hiphop Joint featuring
Theory Hazit, produced by Dilema. Another favorite is the
Lightheaded joint 'Surprise Cipher' which sample the
Minnie Riperton classic 'Inside my Love'. Each of the
smooth melodies in these tracks show a perfect balance to
the classic boom bap displayed throughout the CD.
Heavy Rotation is the perfect name for the 21-track Heavy
Rotation because, well, it will be in heavy rotation in most
mp3 and CD players, and tape decks (some of us still have
those). Hip Hop is Music is definitely ready to make a
stance for good music in the realm of hip hop. Heavy
Rotation is a great start and is highly recommended.
