Malachi Perez - Malachi Perez EP
The man they call Malachi Perez started rapping in 1999 and
has been steadily building a fan base with appearances on
the Sphereofhiphop compilations and opening for such artist
as MG The Visionary, Old Dominon and Project 86. After
gaining a healthy buzz he decided 2003 would be a great year
to drop his first official release, the Malachi Perez EP. It
was perfect timing as he packed his bags and set out on the
road with Pigeon John and Redcloud on the Hawthorne's Most
Wanted tour.
"Hear Now" kicks things off with a symphony laced tracked
that rings about 8 on the head bob meter and is produced by
Novis. The production meshes well with Malachi and works for
a perfect album opener. It looks like the steady touring has
paid off as the first single from the EP has worked its way
to the #1 spot on the RadioU radio charts. The track called
"Sleeping Beauty" features fellow Bufphoon Cyrkel emce'?s
Omega Watts and Redcloud. The beat is again provided by
Novis and this time he gets a perfect 10 on the head bob
meter. If you don't start moving when this track comes on
there is something seriously wrong with your ears. Redcloud
proves again that he can produce a solid hook as this song
will end up as one of the year's catchiest tracks. The rest
of the EP is produced by Malachi and proves he is fresh
behind the boards. "My Nature" slows down the pace of the
EP as Malachi drops simple concretely descriptive lyrics.
Elias lends his skills as he takes care of the chorus and
ends up stealing the show as you will be singing along days
after you hear this track. "Leave It Alone" is probably
the weakest track on the EP as it reminds me of a certain
shady character that has taken over the rap world. The EP
ends with "If It's Easy" with Malachi getting
introspective and dropping a line that expresses the
emcee's mindset: "I perform for an audience of one".
As he is no new jack to the scene his debut EP manages to
steer clear of youthful mistakes and is a great start for
this up and coming emcee. His voice and delivery are solid
but he won?t have you salivating over his flow like Sojourn
or Playdough. This is something that will improve with time
and isn't a large enough hindrance to distract you from
enjoying his album. He has all of the elements to make this
a successful EP, so pick this up while you can and prove you
were a Malachi Perez fan before he makes it big.
