Macho - Freedom (7 Series EP)
By now the concept is well known: seven-song EP’s available
every seven weeks. While this is a difficult task to
undertake, it is taken on with a mixture boldness and
confidence that is only found in Macho, the new lyrical
leader of the Tunnel Rat crew.
Macho displays his evolution and adventurous spirit on the
opening track Music. While his message of authenticity
remains the same, the Boston-born emcee is very willing to
take on new delivery patterns, and pulls this one off
without a hitch. Combined with bouncing clap-track and
vocals from Theresa Jones, Music possesses the mould of a
successful radio hit. While Freedom employs new producers to
diversify the TR sound, you can tell who the veteran is. The
sole submission from Dert (Freedom) is head and shoulders
above the rest of the disc. Dert adds crisp drums to a
grinding guitar sample, miraculously making this track as
much hip-hop as it is rapcore. Freedom is simply lyrical
skills flexed by Macho and guests Propaganda and Triune.
This tune is the best on the record.
Raphi joins the fun on the party-track Get It Poppin’ that
begs the question ‘when are these two going to do a record?’
Labels is a passionate track speaking to frustrations about
the business of music. Infinite is the less potent track,
with a stuttering beat that cries out for variation and
contains too many guests - some of whom struggle to hang. A
neat surprise is the appearance of Sean Slaughter - could we
be seeing more collabs in the future?
Macho finishes the EP on the solo tip with Passion and I
Will Succeed. The former sees Donovan Luke Henry’s brilliant
instrumentation that allows Macho to fervently write on the
life of Jesus Christ. As usual, Mach pulls no punches with
this story, yet this track is limited by a weak drum track.
The final number features a catchy hook from Triune, and a
straightforward commentary from Macho about his drive to be
an influential force in the industry. Hate him or love him,
Macho is clear about his goals and the spiritual source of
his efforts.
It is great to hear some new tunes from Macho with some new
beatmakers. Overall the project is a success, however it is
marred by too many guest appearances. By the time Infinite
ends, this writer finds himself desperate to hear from just
Macho. However, the lyrical intensity and wisdom he provides
on this disc proves he’s ready for a full-length.
