Soup the Chemist - Eargasmic Arrangements
According to the Websters dictionary a Pioneer is defined as
"One who ventures into unknown or unclaimed territory to
settle." That definition is a perfect word picture to
Soup's beginning's in this Gospel Rap thing. When Soup
started there were a couple groups around but no one had put
out a credible album. He has since put out 5 albums and an
EP and has always kept his lyrics raw and beats bumping.
Soup has always had the ability to make you laugh one second
and be in deep thought the next which is always a sign of an
emcee with talent and longevity. This is not lost as you
will experience this often as the album rolls along.
Eargasmic Arrangements could easily become Soup's most
complete album in his long discography. I don't know if I
would say it is his best yet but he defiantly pulls out all
the stops and pours his heart and soul into this long
player. Never one to forget about the four elements of Hip
Hop the second track called Turntabilist is a true ode to
the hard working DJ's across the globe. Not only does Soup
rap about the practice and dope live shows but he has DJ
Gabe Real & DJ Kid Dragon cutting up the track throughout
the song. With a shout out from Grandmaster Flash starting
off the song this is truly a turntabilist anthem. Word Play
will have your average transit riders trying to keep his
composure on a full bus as they bob their head to the beat.
With slow piano chops and some well placed vocal samples
Soup, Aloe Blacc and Sojourn all drop lines that will keep
your finger on the rewind button. Hip Hop has been known to
put out it's fair share of love songs. Most of the time
these tracks make it on the radio but are forgotten because
they have no substance and the true meaning of love is never
even talked about. Enter Soup and Cookbook to create a love
song over a truly romantic beat and an amazing horn sample.
Warn you wife before you listen to Love Song because she
probably won't be able go right to bed that night. Near the
end of the album the title track begins with your mouth
starting to smile as the beat has this weird way of making
you feel instantly happy. Maybe it's the realization that
finally a fresh emcee has rhymed over a dope track to make a
truly memorable song. Soup gets reflective and ponders many
of lifes questions on what is arguably the albums best
track.
Soup comes through with an album that has no filler material
and is full of honest lyrics that help bring the listener
into his world and truly know the man behind the mic. The
only thing I might change is the amount of guests on the
album. Not that they didn't come fresh but because I love
what Soup has to say and feel that I could have heard more.
If this is truly Soup's last album he went out the way a
legend should, on top of his game. I will end this review
off with a thank you to Soup for everything he has done.
Soup has never compromised the art and for that reason alone
his is a legend in the purist form. Now everyone get out
there and buy this album so he can get paid they way he
deserves.
