| Michaelis Constant |
| | Country: | United Kingdom |
Releases: | [Gondwanaland ] [Foreign Correspondence (vinyl single)] [Foreign Correspondence] | Info: | The British group Michaelis Constant was founded in 1998
amongst his members was Joel The Custodian.
Joel
Joel the Custodian’s first recordings emerged in 1997 as a
part of an Indianapolis based rap group DPS, which later
became the critically acclaimed group Mars ILL. After going
back to the United Kingdom Joel became a member of Michaelis
Constant in 1998. The rapper is now part of the duo The
Custodians, since 2002.
Beginnings
Rich, Damaj and Tutall of rascally rap group 8th Element
stumbled into Joel and DJ Log at a Birmingham open mic night
in October 1998. Within a week they were writing new
material together. Michaelis Constant was born. Six months
later they released 'Foreign Correspondence'.
Press
This oddball, dark album proved that UK indy hip-hop could
be both spiritually charged and jocular. Ryan Proctor,
hip-hop editor for Blues & Soul announced that this album
was 'proof that lyrical creativity and ingenuity are still
alive and well in hip-hop'.
Gondwanaland
n 2001 Michaelis Constant had over 20 songs in various
stages of completion. They shot for an eight song mini-album
released by the end of that year. They failed. Instead their
13-song CD 'Gondwanaland' went into shops on the 9th of
February 2002.
Performances
The very next evening they played to a crowd of 500 as the
supporting act for Dilated Peoples, an acclaimed rap group
from California.
They began to regularly perform with the musicians who now
make up Carina Round's live band [www.carinaround.com]. In
their last 10 months together Michaelis opened up for Task
Force, shot a music-video for their album opener
‘Lifeblood’, played at Latvia's first hip-hop festival and
released a vinyl version of Gondwanaland.
Review
The www.ukhh.com review: "From the eerie classical stylings
of ‘Heavy Light’ to the heavyweight piano stabs of
‘Lifeblood’, Michaelis weave humour, religion and life into
tight bursts of first class rhyming. Proudly leftfield,
fantastically produced, intelligent and unafraid to wear
their faith on their sleeves, Michaelis Constant were never
going to be middle-of-the-road boom-bap. Strictly limited,
this slab of wax will be (quite rightly) worth serious cash
in years to come and is a fitting farewell to one of the
UK’s most original and innovative crews."
Albums
The group Michaelis Constant made two albums before
disbanding.
