Study
The crew got together in 1987. When Kelvin Harvey and Alton
Hood studied at Oberlin College, Ohio.
Drugs
Then they meet friends, who are into the occult and use
drugs during these rites. Eventually drugs become an
addiction for Alton, but God releaves him from this burden.
About that he says "Praise God, through a supernatural
manifestation of the Holy Spirit, God's power came down
right there in the room, saved me, delivered me right there
on the spot and just cleaned me up".
Faith
The crew continued to rap, but now about faith and founded
Disciples of Christ or D.O.C. as they describe a "vocal hip
hop R&B band".
Debut album
The members on the debut album So How Ya Livin'? (1991) are
Michael Brown, Kelvin Harvey, Alton Hood and Matt Stevens.
Compilation
Their first song can be heard on the StarSong rap sampler
"Ultimate Rap 2" in 1990. A year later their debut album So
how ya livin'? was released.
Nominations
Besides receiving Dove Award nominations (GMA) a Grammy
nomination came in 1993 for the album "Pulling No Punches".
This project coupled them with the legendary funk artist
Bootsy Collins.
Albums
In 1994 when the third album "Righteous Funk" comes out, the
quartet has become a triplet together with the alias names
Absalom (Kelvin Harvey), Ben Reges (Alton Hood) and Prophet
(Michael Brown).
Come Back
After a long time of silence the D.O.C. came back with a
full length album called "The Antidote" in 2004. DOC has
become a duo by then, Alton Hood and David Brooks. The
ministry of D.O.C. returns where it all started from they
visit schools and perform their own musicalproductions
called Rapusicals.
Rapusicals
The rapusical is a powerful tool in creative evangelism.
It's purpose is to show everyday life and it's influence by
the spiritual forces in the unseen realm, while presenting
the things of God, in a way that is attainable, tangible,
and culturally relevant. Merging the truth of God's word
with poetry, hip hop, dance, drama and mime.
Creative force
Also, joining D.O.C. at the creative round table is Rev. Joe
Harrison. Minister Harrison brings twenty years of ministry
experience and theatrical expertise to the live production
of the Rapusical. |
