The project merged the musicalstyles of bebop and hip hop,
creating "hip bop" alongside some spoken word. From the
third album Strong As Death in 2000 the band changed the
spelling of the name into Storytellas.
Innercity Youth
The project is led by Reverend Joseph Henry Cortese,
co-pastor of the Crossroads Tabernacle, Bronx, New York. The
Storytellers was birthed out of the desire to reach and
communicate to inner city youth who are not drawn to
conventional church outreach efforts. As a result, during
the Fall of 1997 Pastor Cortese invited several Hip Hop
ministries to form an alliance with his ministry, The Upper
Room Music Company, and formed The Storytellers.
