An evangelism tool, developed at Trinity Church of Morrisania in the birthplace of Hip Hop, the South Bronx, containing daily prayers, psalms, a variety of services (including a Eucharist), and a selection of bible stories all designed with the enlivening power of Hip Hop in mind, and prefaces by two bishops of the Episcopal Church and a wealth of contextualizing materials.

Editor
The Rev. Timothy Holder is the rector of Trinity Episcopal Church of Morrisania in the South Bronx of the City of New York and the Founding Priest and Pastor of the HipHopEmass.

Controversy
Besides a great initiative, controversy could start about the editor, who is ordained in 1997 as the first openly gay priest in Alabama, United States. Some christians feel there is a mixed message in spreading the gospel and being open about homosexuality, which is considered a sin.

Like the culture it rises from, the hip-hop church is relevant and bold. And it speaks to the heart. In this book, pastors Efrem Smith (Raising Up Young Heroes: Developing a Revolutionary Youth Ministry) and Phil Jackson show the urgency of connecting hip-hop culture and church to reach a generation with the gospel of Jesus Christ. They give practical ideas from their urban churches and other hip-hop churches about how to engage and incorporate rap, break dancing, poetry and deejays to worship Jesus and preach his Word.

Growing up, Mykel Mitchell found more truth in the words of Run DMC than any preacher's sermon. He saw more prosperity in the lives of local drug dealers than in the lives of neighboring saints. It was only natural that he would gravitate toward hustling. Years later, when "the life" left him empty and he had nothing to lose, he gave Jesus Christ a chance-and he's never looked back.
In "Word", Mitchell takes us on the personal, moving, and at times, humorous journey that helped him reconcile his faith in Christ, not only with his intellect and instincts-but with his passion for all things hip-hop. In this refreshingly candid take on church doctrine, he addresses questions like "Why does God need my money?" and "What's the big deal with sex anyway?" and explains how he came to rock baggy jeans and sports jerseys right along with his platinum cross and tattered Bible, without shame or apologies.

Lauryn Hill and Tupac Shakur are modern-day prophets. Written on subway walls and tenement halls, their lyrics challenge us as individuals and as a society to stop doing wrong and learn to do right (Isaiah 1:16-17). They paint an honest picture of life as it is lived, and hint at a vision of life as it ought to be lived. With this book John Teter and Alex Gee invite us to enter into the world of these hip-hop prophets--to follow their message to its ultimate fulfillment at the feet of the Prophet-King Jesus. They invite you to Follow the beats. Let the truth speak through the beats of the streets. Love is real. Hope is real. Jesus is real.
