| | Country: | United States |
Releases: | [Let's Talk About Jesus (single)] [I Saw Love] | Info: | Revoyda Frierson better known as singer and actress Ketty
Lester is born in Hope, Arkansas on August 16th, 1934.
Singer
She started her career after studying music at San Francisco
State College and performing in the city's Purple Onion club
in the early 1950s.
Hitsingle
She is probably best known for her 1962 R&B hit single,
"Love Letters", released on Era Records, which reached the
Top 5 of the charts in both the United States and the United
Kingdom.
Actress
Ketty Lester later on changed her singing career into acting
as a television actress in the 1970s and 1980s. She made her
first appearance in the movie Up Tight! (1968) as Alma. Her
last TV appearance is in the comedy series "Getting
Personal" as Nana in 1998.
TV Series
She has appeared in series, like:
- Sanford and Son (1973)
- Days of Our Lives (1975 -1977) as Helen Grant.
- Little House on the Prairie (1978-1983) as Hester-Sue
Terhune.
- Hill Street Blues (1983) as Mrs. Tatum
- LA Law (1991)
HipHop Single
The Encyclopedia of Popular Music claims that Ketty Lester
would exclusively perform sacred music later on in her
career. This would explain the hip hop flavoured "Let's Talk
About Jesus" single of 1984 released on Mega Records.
Femcee
Taking into account that the first christian rap single is
MC Sweet's "Jesus Christ (the gospel beat)" of 1982. Ketty
Lester is the first female rapping about Jesus in 1984
making her the first christian femcee. In retrospect the
second solo release of a femcee is the release of MC Ge Gee
"I'm For Real" from 1990.
Rapping
Although Ketty Lester is a singer of origine the rapping is
done in an old school rap fashion, almost preaching kind of
way.
Album
The single "Let's Talk About Jesus" is taken of the album "I
Saw Love" (1984). It's not known if there are more hip hop
like tracks on the album. The album "I Saw Love" is usually
dubbed gospel or soul.
