Releases: | [Nobility] [Magnanimous Limited Edition] [Magnanimous] | Info: | Deshon Bullock is Shonlock from Chicago, Illinois started
out as a "b-boy" in the midwest streets of Chicago. Although
writing was always a passion, dancing was a major
contributor to his reputation as “talented” during his high
school years.
Aaliyah
His gift caught the attention of stage show producers, who
after a brief audition asked Shon to assist in the
choreography of R&B singer Aaliyah (R.I.P. 1979-2001).
Grits
After three months of working diligently with Aaliyah's
team. Shon was blessed with yet another opportunity by
invitation of Grits' (old) manager to work with the
Nashville based hip hop crew. This took him into the
christian music market.
Faith
Although Shonlock had a christian upbringing, he went to
church, the MC was not focused on Christ. He says about this
changing event in his life: "and being with Grits there was
a guy named Knowdaverbs (I think we all know Verbs). Well he
was very important in my turn around to rededicate my life
to Christ. That is how I ended up getting saved you know
really saved, was through his help. Now I was living it not
just saying it."
Stage charisma
During this time with the Grits, Shon continued to develop
his rhyme skills and a deeper understanding of the Christian
faith. This sparked an overall blend of faith based music
accompanied by Shon’s stage charisma.
On stage
Shonlock has appeared on stage with Nicole C. Mullen, Grits,
the Katinas and he still extensively toured with TobyMac.
Highlights
Besides working with the likes of Aaliyah, Arrested
Development and Kirk Franklin, Shonlock can be heard on the
following albums:
Holy Hip Hop : Taking the Gospel to the Streets
[compilation] (2004) on "Boogie Bounce".
Verbs - Unlocked (2003) on "Live To The Music".
DJ Maj - The Ringleader (2003) on "So Excited".
Zoegirl - Mix of life [remix album] (2002) on "You've Been
Dismissed".
EP
He released the EP Magnanimous in 2002, which would be a
pre-release for the album The Wait Is Over. The EP sold over
10.000 copies, but his debut album expected for December
2004 or early 2005 has not been released as of yet.
Word Records
Shonlock was signed to Word Records for 6 albums in 2006.
Due to the lack of marketing skills of the Word Records
organisation Shonlock broke off the arrangements in March
2007. The label had trouble marketing urban music, therefore
his album was postponed and promotion was hampered.
Hard Pill
The MC states about this time: “When I signed with Word they
said that they were willing to try certain things to break
into hip hop. I believed them. But things changed after I
signed the deal and anything outside of the CCM or the white
side of the industry they weren’t interested in putting
money in. That was a hard pill to swallow. I’m not calling
anybody anything but if you’re a Christian label and you
have an African American artist and you don’t want to market
anything outside of the white market with respect to an art
form that was made from African Americans then something is
wrong.”
New label
On February 19th, 2009 Arrow Records announces they have
signed the rapper Shonlock.
Albums
The rapper secured the rights to his album, which was to be
released by Word Records as "Nobility" in 2007. He
contemplated a digital album only, but on June 5th, 2007
Shonlock released a "promo pack", buying this pack means
getting the "Magnanimous Limited Edition" and receiving the
album "Nobility" for free.
New Project
Shonlock is working on a new album for Arrow Records to be
released in 2010. Title to be announced.
