Luke Geraty - The Before I Sold Out EP
In 2002 the long forgotten EP made a huge comeback. Artists
such as Aesop Rock, Mars ill, Demigodz and La Symphony (just
to name a few) all put out quality EPs over the course of
the year. After listening to the Luke Geraty EP I would add
his name to that list of 2002 dope EPs. For those of you who
dont know, Luke is a MC from the hip hop hotbed of
Minnesota. He has rhymed for the last 12 years and has
appeared on everything from Phonetic Composition's PC Tools
to E-Roc's Avalanche.
The album starts off on a good foot as the standout track
"Drowning In My Dreams" makes its way into your eardrums.
Luke goes into detail about what children worry about over
John Huss's guitar focused track. The cuts at the end by DJ
Jayvee make this already hot track even hotter. Geraty
sounds best when has an issue to rap about, not to say that
his braggadocios raps are bad, but he is at his best when
heartfelt topics are on his mind. A prime example of this is
"Success" and "Crayons". "Success" has Luke and Elias
questioning what America turns its cheek to for the chance
to acquire more greenbacks. Well-placed vocal snippets are
strategically positioned and add to the track. Elias drops
some of the EP's most memorable lines and will have you
rethinking your last couple purchases at Foot Locker.
Crayons take on the topic of child abuse and the affects it
has on children. Luke is able to showcase his storytelling
skills and doesn't disappoint.
The art of the remix has unfortunately changed over the
years, instead of trying to build on the original you now
have a couple guest MC's rhyming over the songs original
beat. Fortunately, Luke decided to follow Common, not Puffy,
and has given us a remix more reminiscent of Soul By The
Pound then Pass the Courvoisier Part 2. The song
"Traveling" that was first heard on Fashion Expo is
remixed by Know1 and is just as good if not better then the
original offering.
This is a great introduction to what Luke is capable of an
MC. This is not a perfect EP, as songs like "I'll Be Good
To You" and "Listen Up" don't live up to the standards
set by "Success" and "Drowning In My Dreams". Don't let
those minor setbacks steer you away, there is plenty of good
music you can sink you teeth into. Luke has a full length
album scheduled to drop in 2003 and let's hope that he can
build on the foundation that was laid with Before I Sold Out
and come back even stronger on his full length.
