Underground Rise - Sunrise, Sunset
After writing many reviews sometimes you need to change
things up. I felt this album would be a perfect chance to
run down the 5 W's because a compilation like this does not
come around very often. Before I start I would just like to
give the Rats a huge two thumbs up for being the crew to
bring all of these talented emcees together on one album.
There is nothing worse then those cut and paste posse cuts
that make no sense. All songs on Underground Rise have a
cohesive feel and you can tell everyone was in the studio
working together and having a good time.
Who: This is a compilation album put together by the Tunnel
Rats and released on Uprok records. The Rats invited a bunch
of Underground talent to join them on this monumental
release. Some the guest that rhyme on this album are LA
Symphony, 2mex, Remnant, LMNO, Listener, Mars ill, Mass
Reality, Playdough, Dezin8ed and Sekou the Misfit.
What: What this album has done is brought together a bunch
of heads from the underground together to show the world
that there is talent outside of what is heard on your local
radio station or BET. Each artist brought their A game and
spit with skill and heart that can be heard through out the
album.
When: The recording of this album took place over a weekend
in the summer of 2002 in sun drenched golden state.
Where: Underground Rise was recorded at the Rat Hole which
is the Tunnel Rats recording studio located in greater Los
Angeles area.
Why: This album was put together to help show unity between
underground artists which is very apparent on the song
Remember This Day. This is a huge posse cut featuring
everyone from Dax to 2Mex with all of them takeing turns
ripping a verse. In the background you can hear people
cheering after a dope line was spit and at the end of the
song when the beat stops and the beatbox takes over the
youthful exuberance is in full effect. This album also gives
everyone a chance to hear certain emcees collaborate with
artists they normally would not. Kick Kick has LMNO with
Knows, Zane, Dax Dezin8ed and Sev rapping over a basic snare
beat. Real Money has Macho teaming up Dert the producer who
decides it's time to step out from behind the boards to
drop a rhyme. Dert laces himself with an outstanding track
as he and Macho talk about money and the pitfalls of the
music industry. One Voice is a monster track as each member
of the Tunnel Rats and La Symphony come together and share
the mic. I honestly never thought this would happen and it
is a must hear as these two talented crews show how many
versatile members they have.
So there you have it, the 5 W's on the newest compilation
from the Tunnel Rats. There is a lot of different styles
presented, so you might not feel every song, for example
Ladders could have been left off but there will be enough
tracks to make it worth the purchase. In a rap industry
where everyone seems like they are out for self it is great
to see everyone come together for one cause. Don't sleep on
this release because this is hopefully the start of many
more compilations that will follow this mold.
