KJ-52 is Jonah Sorrentino from Florida. He started out as a
member of Sons of Intellect, before going solo. Like
TobyMac, KJ-52 has been able to reach a broader audience
with a more accessible sound of hip hop.
Name
The KJ part is an abbreviation for his old rap name that he
used to have King J-Mack, while the 52 part, which is
pronounced "five two" not fifty two, is a reference to the
five loaves and two fish that Jesus used to feed the 5000.
In that story in the bible Jesus took one boys five loaves
and two fish and fed the masses.
KJ-52 says about this "God takes the little that we have and
multiplies it when we decide to place what we have in his
hands. I didn't have much to offer when I started, but
whatever I had I was going to give it over to Christ."
Debut Album
Before he was KJ-52, the MC released a music cassette "Back
From Da' Grave" as King J-Mack in 1995. But this city youth
pastor turned hip hop artist made his real debut as KJ-52
with the independant release of "7th Avenue" in 2000. He
later on got signed to Uprok Records and released
"Collaborations" in 2002. The record can be seen as his
breakthrough album. It contains the song Dear Slim.
Dear Slim
This song about a conversation with top selling hiphop
artist Eminem got KJ-52 much publicity.
The show TRL of MTV decided to play the Dear Slim video, but
the TV station played it up as some controversial song that
was a ?diss? on Eminem. They only showed one minute of the
video and cut it off after the first verse. Which is the
least spiritual and most controversial verse, if it's not
heard in context of the rest of the song.
MTV then proceeded to say KJ-52 was nothing more than some
MC trying to make a name by taking a shot at Eminem. After a
lengthy internet message board debate on mtv.com and a push
to get the video played in entirety that was the end of it.
The station never let KJ-52 explain the song or play the
whole video.
