Info: | Braille is Bryan Winchester born in Portland, Oregon in
1981. He started recording at the age of 14. He's been part
of several groups and projects. Better known is his
colleboration with the crew Lightheaded or the project Acts
29 (Album: Under Exposed - 2002). The MC has done extensive
tours in the United States as well as in Japan. Braille's
album Shades Of Grey (2004) has been much acclaimed.
Crews
This is a list of crews Braille was part of, only Acts 29
and Lightheaded have released CDs:
- Mentors of the Aurora: Braille, Ethic, ILLtrip.
- Cave Wonders: Braille and Ethic.
- Return to Sender: Braille and Ohmega Watts.
- Super Double: Braille and Doug MC.
- Blue Collars Collective: Braille, Sev Statik, Manchild.
- INFO Traits: Braille and Elucid.
- Acts 29: Braille, Ohmega Watts, Soul Plasma.
- Lightheaded: Braille, Ohmega Watts, Othello.
Beginnings
Quake was the MC's first name. After he came to Christ he
changed his name into Reflection. As Reflection he released
The Greyhound Sampler (1995), when he was 14 years old. The
music cassette contained 7 or 8 songs.
Crew
Reflection (Braille) formed "The Ninjitsu Sonifers" with
Prototype the Meditating Maniac (Ethic) and Parallel the
Mental Contortionist (ILLtrip). Reflection, is then known as
Perplex the Cerebration Bizarre. Together the group finished
a 13 song music cassette called "The Unimportant Ones"
(1998). Realizing the name Ninjitsu Sonifers was't too
good, they changed it into Mentors of the Aurora.
Solo Recording
At the age of 16 years old Braille used the name "Perplex
for the Mind, Braille for the Soul". He released the album
"An Answer for a Question that Wasn't Asked" (1998) under
this alias. The record was only released on music cassette,
each copy being hand made by Braille, and all the beats
produced by ILLtrip.
Unfinished project
Just a few weeks before moving to New Jersey Braille began
working on another album with Ethic as "The Cave Wonders" in
Portland. This is when Braille was going by Braille The
Suction Cup Ohm. He used 6 producers from other states he
had met through the internet on this project. The 14 or 16
songs they recorded were never released as the group didn't
feel they had the time needed to make the project the best
as it could be. The workingtitle of the album was
Biodegradable.
LifeFirst
Braille moved to New Jersey and soon found a studio,
Eastwick Studios. Mike from ESWP Music contacted Braille
about recording a full length album in Eastwick Studios,
this would become Lifefirst : Half the Battle (1999).
Braille would take every weekend for 8 months to record the
album at Eastwick Studios in Philadelphia. Braille states:
"During the week, all I would do was think about the
weekend. I couldn't wait to record, and make some music."
Priority
After the initial success of the Lifefirst album, which was
given good reviews and sold on several sites the MC fell
into a depression: "I was kind of in this stage, while
working on the album, but after it dropped it got worse."
Braille realized the depression came because he was out of
touch with God. When he moved to New Jersey he was out of
church for awhile: "I didn't know God personally, I just
believed in him. He wasn't priority in my life." This would
change in the future.
Shades Of Grey
The MC finally teamed up with Ohmega Watts to lay the
foundation for the project Acts 29 and to later on form the
crew Lightheaded. In 2004 Braille released the successful
album Shades Of Grey on Syntax Records. These early
beginnings would turn into even more solo recordings and
eventually his own record label.
Label Hip Hop is Music
Besides a new Lightheaded record, the year 2006 is a
turningpoint for Braille, because then his label HipHop is
Music will actually have a roster of artists and 7 albums
on it's way. In March 2006 a compilation album called "Heavy
Rotation volume 1" is released as a sample of HipHop Is
Music's talents.
Touring
The MC has been touring with DJ Idull as support act for
soul artist James Brown in Europe in 2006.
Box of Rhymes
Braille released "Box of Rhymes" in June 2006 in Japan. The
project started out as an EP, which was going to get
released about six months after the "Shades of Grey" album
in 2004. But Braille didn't feel it was good enough. So he
went on to make new songs. Therefore "Box of Rhymes" evolved
into a full length album. It's international release was in
November 2006.
Geneva Project
During the Ohmega Watts tour Surreal, Ohmega, Braille and DJ
Idull recorded "4 Days In Geneva". The album was released in
Japan in May 2007.
Album: The IV
The MC released the album entitled "The IV Edition" in
2008. Braille explains the title: IV [editor: Intravenous,
injected in a vein] means the distribution of a solution, or
distribution of a medicine. [...] It's more talking about,
we, as a whole can be the IV or can be the remedy for
situations or sicknesses that we see around us."
Explanation:
Braille wants the album to serve as an IV to distribute
musical medicine for social illnesses directly into the
veins of the society. IV also stands for "International
Vision", becoming more aware of what's going on in the world
around us, and "International Version", the album is made
for an international audience and features German, French,
Finish and Australian producers like M-Phazes, Aetoms,
Staffro, etc.
Balance
As the rapper explains in his Update June 12th, 2007: "I've
been working hard to capture a balance on this new record
showcasing the rawness and lyricism of "Shades of Grey"
along with the spiritual depth and personal touch of "Box of
Rhymes".
Videos
A video is already in the making (June 2007) for the song
called "The IV" of his next album "The IV Edition".
Releasedate
The album was released in 2008. As Braille explains: "I just
wanted to let everyone know that I'm working hard to finish
my new album "the IV Edition" by the end of September
[2007]. The record won't drop until 2008 - but I'll
definitely start leaking some singles before the end of the
year."
Distribution
Braille is partnering with Syntax Records/Koch Distribution
for the North America release of the album. Other
partnerships are P-Vine (Japan), CVibes (Australia) and Fat
City (UK/Europe).
New Project
On October 21st, 2008 Braille announces the project,
entitled "Cloud Nineteen". The rapper worked on this new
album with producer: S1 (Symbolyc One) from Strange Fruit
Project. As Braille explains: "The first song me and S1 did
together was "Blessed Man" from my solo record "The IV
Edition" (2008). This instantly became a fan favorite and
people have always responded really positive towards that
song. Our intention isn't to make an album full of similar
sounding songs because you can't FORCE songs like that. So
we approached this new record with a clean slate and just
allowed the creativity and inspiration to flow."
Freebie Album
Braille explains his giving away the album "Cloud Nineteen"
(2009): "In the past I've had some opportunities to visit
youth prisons, after school programs and boys homes. These
experiences have always been meaningful to me but now I feel
like it's time for me to specifically start focusing on the
youth. Sometimes when I'm touring I only have 60 CDS on
hand in my vehicle. Anyone who has ever been to one of my
concerts knows that I always do my best to be gracious and
give away my music to people who can't afford it. I
remember times where kids would crowd around me wanting CDs
- most of them legitimately didn't have ANY money. I was
usually only able to give out 3 or 4 copies and I felt
terrible. For an artist to visit these places where kids
are, spend time with them and bring them a gift is a huge
deal. In 2009 me and S1 are setting a goal to give away
30,000 copies of our new CD to teenagers in youth prisons,
boys homes and after school programs. To the best of our
ability, we plan on delivery these CDs to each facility in
person. Our hope is to set up sessions with the kids, give
them the free CDs, do a free performance and also do some
music education. We are working on a partnership so that
these 30,000 CDs will come with a bonus disc including free
music software and tutorial videos teaching youth about
music production and song writing."
