Mars ILL featuring Soulheir the Manchild on the mic and
DJ/producer Dust. Manchild is Greg Owens and Dust is Nate
Corrona. Mars ILL has a very distinctive sound due to the
production of Dust. And both are members of the hip hop
collective Deepspace5.
Dead Poets Society
The crew Dead Poets Society was the foundation of Mars ILL.
It consisted of Dust and Rahlo. ManChild met them in the
summer of 1998 and started touring together in January of
1999. After Dust's move to Atlanta, Rahlo went solo as
Blacksoil Project and thus Mars ILL was born.
Break
This much respected crew from Atlanta had their big break
with the album Raw Material on Uprok Records in 2001. The
album is considered by many in the holyhiphop scene a
classic.
Label
Several releases later they joined Gotee Records as the new
hip hop additions of the label together with LA Symphony.
The record Backbreakanomics (2003) would be the first Gotee
release. The crew also releases albums through their label
Deepspace5 Records.
Gotee
The crew signed with Gotee Records in 2003, right before
they had finished the album Backbreakanomics.
Pro Pain
The album Pro Pain was expected to be released in July 2005.
But due to a sample clearing issue the album was recalled
from the stores and the release got delayed until 2006. Some
units of the recalled version were still sold by shops and
have become quite a collector's item. The new release
finally came out on the 2nd of May 2006.
Changes
The 2006 Pro Pain album contains two new songs: "Glam Rap"
and "Too Strong To Change".
Three songs have not made it in regards of the recalled
version of Pro Pain (2005): "All Out", "Moment" and
"Loud!".
Title
The albumtitle Pro Pain is explained in the liner notes:
"This record is dedicated to all professional musicians, who
know what it is to struggle, scratch and survive. Understand
that it hurts to grow and to change. ProPain."
Nominations
On February 20th, 2007 it was announced that the Mars ILL
album Pro Pain (2006) is nominated for the 38th Annual GMA
Dove Awards in the category Rap/Hip Hop Album of the
Year.
Anniversary
Mars ILL celebrated the five year anniversary of their
classic album Raw Material with a special release in 2006,
entitled Raw Material : Fifth Year Anniversary. This release
was made possible by finding the original masters back,
stashed away in a priority mail box. The six elusive DATA
tapes, thought lost, were uncovered, while cleaning up the
basement. The album contains three bonus songs: "Flipside"
versions 1 and 2 and "Sphere of Hip Hop", reworked and
remixed in 2000.
Solo Adventures
The year 2007 is the blossoming of projects outside Mars ILL
for the two members Dust and Manchild.
Dust
In 2006 Dust and rapper Sev Statik teamed up to make the
album: "Back To Dust". On April 6th, 2007 it became known
that the project is chosen to be distributed through the
label Rawkus Records. The deal, a digital release, plus
special promotional activities is called Rawkus 50.
ManChild
On July 8th, 2007 the wife of Dust acknowledged the rumour
of Manchild making a solo album for the Beatmart Records
label, but this is called off on October 4th, 2007.
ManChild does form a new duo with Sean P as the Move
Merchants, this was announced on August 11th, 2007.
Business concept
On January 7th, 2008 ManChild announces a new site to be
launched on February 1st, 2008: www.manchildinsider.com.
It's a subscription only website, where he will offer 5 new
songs every month for $5 / month. A Mars ILL version of the
site marsillinsider.com will be launched as well.
New Project
On December 11th, 2007 a new project is announced, entitled
"Slow Flame", which is a reworked version of the original
album "Pro Pain" (2004/2006) album.
