Releases: | [Light Up The Dark] [Christmas (EP)] [Commanders Of The Resistance] [Get Y'all Back Home (single)] [Souljahz Classics Remixed : Dem Growin' Pains] [S.O.S. (single)] [The Fault Is History] [Souljahz] | Info: | The Souljahz started as a trio they consisted of Joshua,
Jekob, and Rachael Washington releasing their first album in
1998. But they are now performing as The Washington Projects
featuring Jekob and Rachael Washington, since July 2006.
Dream
Joshua and Jekob, both gifted athletes, opted for a career
in music over college basketball scholarships, while sister
Rachael, an award winning dancer, was quick to follow the
same dream.
Influences
With musical influences that range from Michael Jackson and
Stevie Wonder to Wes Montgomery and the Fugees, the
threesome quickly established themselves on the Southern
California music scene, appearing regularly at local
churches and talent shows and garnering a fast growing
following in the process.
So promising was the group's potential that their father
sold his business to help manage their career.
Debut album
It proved to be a wise move, as events quickly catapulted
Souljahz into a whole new arena, with an invitation to
record a series of demos in Germany, followed by a string of
high-profile showcase performances. The trio meanwhile
continued recording, releasing their selftitled album on
Eternal Funk Records in 1998.
MTV
Along with an appearance on MTV's It's Your Show and the
inclusion of a Souljahz's original track on the ASCAP
compilation The Ear Volume 2 (2000), major label interest
was inevitable for the group who later garnered press
coverage that singled them out as "a smash act in the
making".
Squint Entertainment
On February 4th, 2002 it was announced that the group had
signed a deal with the label Squint Entertainment.
Sophomore Album
Their sophomore release "The Fault Is History" (2002),
released on Squint, was a success due to the powerful
message and the terrific blend of R&B and hip hop.
Awards: GMA
In 2003 the Souljahz even received a Dove award at the GMA
Awards Ceremony for "All Around The World" (2002) in the
category "Rap/Hip Hop Recorded Song of the Year".
Silence
After their second release The Fault Is History (2002) it
became silent, as the Souljahz state: "When new management
takes over a record label plenty of unfortunate events can
happen to an artist, one of them being down time. We have
sat patiently awaiting an answer as to where the label wants
to go with us as a group. It's hard because this is our
life, this is what God himself has called us to do. We are
as frustrated as any of you out there reading this, but we
know that God is in control."
Featured
The Souljahz are also featured on the Jesus 2000 Compilation
(2000) of Eternal Funk Records with the two tracks "Rap
Revolution" and "Life".
Troop Support
In support of the US army personnel, they released the
single "SOS" in August 2005, which stands for "Show Our
Servicemembers Love". In December 2006 the group, then named
"The Washington Projects", would perform for the American
troops in Afghanistan and release the single "Get Y'all Back
Home".
Fund raising
To raise funds the Souljahz have also dedicated all of their
proceeds from the online downloads of the song "Poor Man" to
the victims of Hurricane Katrina (September 2005).
Remix Album
The crew released a remix album "Souljahz Classics Remixed"
based upon their selftitled debut album (1998) in February
2005.
New Name
The band started over in the fall of 2006 as The Washington
Projects. The name Souljahz was laid to rest, but the trio
became a duo, Joshua Washington left the band.
Shelved Album
During the time their recordlabel Squint Entertainment went
through a reorganisation the group turned in a full 11 track
record, that was self produced, with co-production by Chris
Rodriguez, and Kiko Cibrian, with features from Robert
Randolph. The new regime shelved the record and made no
attempt to establish a date or time to record a new record
for over a year and a half.
Birth
As the band states on their MySpace site (2006): "In July
2006 the group known as Souljahz among their fans for over 8
years disbanded due to irreconcilable differences with their
record label. Rather than go to court over the use of the
name to finally be able to release a new record after a 4
year absence, they decided to use the name given to them by
birth which no one can ever take from them. The Washington
Projects."
Video
The Washington Projects released their first video under the
new name entitled "Take it to the streets" on November 5th,
2007. A second one called "You Are My World" was released on
August 23rd, 2008.
Albums
The first album under the new name The Washington Projects
is "Commanders Of The Resistance" released in 2007.
Christmas Project
In September 2008 the duo released the Christmas EP.
New project
April 24th, 2009 a new project is announced entitled "Light
Up The Dark".
